Liverpool Claim Community Shield

Liverpool have started the Spring season in some style, claiming their second consecutive Community Shield in a scintillating affair this afternoon. The reds dominated throughout, notching 20 shots on target. Their lack of ruthlessness almost cost them however, as the power-packed Chelsea lineup is never more than a favorable bounce away from snatching the game.

Alberto Aquilani opened the scoring after 20 minutes, and it looked as if the floodgates may open; but a top-notch performance from Petr Cech kept the blues in this one. 15 minutes from time Didier Drogba put Chelsea level and it looked as if the smash and grab was on. Last year's top performer, Steven Gerrard restored the lead for Liverpool just 5 minutes into extra time; and Fernando Torres looked to have put the game to bed 10 minutes after that. Frank Lampard was able to snatch a late consolation goal for Chelsea, but the Community Shield was headed back to Anfield for the second time.
