International First Round Winners & Losers

Winners

Germany

Top of Group A with minimum fuss and on course to maintain their 100% qualification record. There has yet to be a semi final without the Germans (only once failing to qualify as group winners), and even more impressive, there has yet to be a final without them either.

Mario Gomez

Seven goals in two games and two man of the match performances to boot. As long as he can avoid Fabricio Miccoli's second round syndrome, surely a slew of plaudits are on their way.

England

Thanks to Gianluigi Buffon's match-winning performance against France, the Three Lions have been handed a lifeline to the top of Group B. If they can win out (a very realistic task), they will be well poised for a third finals appearance in four years.

Ireland

A nation chosen for all the right reasons. Let's hope the GIMP gods reward his loyalty.

Losers

Holland

There's much to be said about winning or drawing ugly (about 150 comments worth apparently), unfortunately for Cushing, there's far less to be said about losing pretty.

France

In failing to beat Italy, France has left the Group B door wide open. Another victory over England is essential, unless they fancy the Germans in the knockout rounds.

Italy

A 5-1 thrashing is bad for morale at any stage. Conceding two penalties after scoffing at allegations of recklessness is amusing. Providing a blueprint of how to be beaten is worst of all.

In England's five goal romp, Burns did the rest of the league a favour in exposing a crowded, defensive team's weakness: pace and width. Utilising a 4-3-3 against a 4-5-1 ensured England would not be overrun or crowded out in midfield and pacy outlets at WF unlocked the space in behind a sluggish back four.

Can Italy adjust? Burns will find out soon enough. If the rest of league follows the England gaffer's blueprint, Palermo may be back to the drawing board as well.

...right, 150 more, yeah?

  1. He does it all, yes he does
He knows how to please in every detail
He can do more than you'd ever imagine
And do it with style, he does it with me, oh yes he does
I know that you thought that you knew him
Well maybe you did, but you don't
He only reveals what he wants you to see
And then shows it all, and when he does, he satisfies me
    If you only knew
    Just what he could do
You'd want him too, if you only knew...
