Ingoglia labelled the opening minutes, "crack-fueled" as neither side could establish much of a rhythm. Italy was able to take advantage, catching the Germans on the break, and netting through a 25th minute Pazzini strike.
"With the lead, I did my best to defend and try not to open myself up. Yet the Germans kept coming with their blitzkrieg of an attack," opined Ingoglia- using a slightly offensive reference. The German possession eventually became too much for the Italians, and Mario Gotze danced around six tired legs to slot coolly beyond Buffon in the 87th minute.
Ingoglia lamented his squad went "catatonic in disbelief " after the equaliser- leading to the confusion that allowed the winner 4 minutes later. Bastian Schweinsteiger drew several fouls in the closing minutes, but floated his first free kick too long at the far post. He redeemed himself on his second chance, however taking advantage of curious Italian defending. When defending the 34 yard free kick, one blue shirt made a bee-line for the far post, in an effort to assist Buffon's net keeping no doubt, but leaving substitute Marko Marin free to run unmarked and onside to the penalty spot, where he duly powered Schweinsteiger's perfectly weighted ball into the top corner with his finely-honed faux-hawk.
The 92nd minute winner ensured Germany would participate in their sixth International Cup final, maintaining their 100% appearance record. "This is a tough pill to swallow and it's going to be a very long ride home." Ingoglia concluded. "Victory was taken right out of our grasp. I tip my cap to the Germans' resilience."
