Dominant Liverpool Saunters to 'Shield Victory

Liverpool continued their scintillating run of form from last GIMP season, putting in an unfaltering performance to claim the Community Shield. Albert Aquilani impressed in his Liverpool debut scoring the opener after 21 minutes. Mirko Vucinic leveled the scoreline 4 minutes later with a low 21-yard strike into the left corner. That would prove to be the only joy for Roma as the following 85 minutes were comfortably controlled by Liverpool. Mascherano was massive in midfield, as Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres racked up opportunity after opportunity. A sublime Gerrard free kick put Liverpool ahead on 34 minutes, and a Torres brace put the match beyond doubt. 

The curtain has been raised on the '09 season. League matches will begin on Monday night. If the Community Shield is any indication, Liverpool look every bit the title contenders they proved to be last season.
