Liverpool Relish Friday Night Double

Liverpool beat Chelsea a combined 9-1 over their two matches.

It was a night to remember for Liverpool, as they swept aside a lackluster Chelsea squad not once, but twice.

Second Place Usurped

In the Premier League match up, two first half goals from captain Steven Gerrard would prove enough to see the Reds level with the Blues on points. However, a shambolic Chelsea performance in the second half allowed Dirk Kuyt and Luis Suarez to add to their goal tallies.

The Blues managed nary a shot during the second 45 minutes, and despite the ever-presence of the tireless Ramires, could only watch helplessly as Steven Gerrard conducted the Scouse symphony with aplomb.

Liverpool snatch second place from Burns' side with that win, and their vastly superior goal differential should be more than enough to act as an extra point through the remaining six matches.

Andy Carroll now sits clear atop the C. Cup scoring charts with 10.

Semifinals (at least) Appearance All Sewn Up

With Luis Suarez and Steven Gerrard rested ahead of the big League match against Bayern München, all eyes focused on Andy Carroll and whether his lack of league appearances would hamper his fine Champions Cup form. Four goals later, all questions have been well and truly answered.

The big Geordie was absolutely immense as he bullied Ivanovic and Terry into submission. There was little either Chelsea defender could do, as the Liverpool number 9 was simply too much for them in every aspect.

Liverpool sit comfortably on the summit of the Champions Cup group stage, boasting maximum points and the only positive goal differential. Even if they fail to secure top spot with a draw in either of their final two matches, they have already ensured a spot in the two-legged semi final.
