In a much needed win, Palermo defeated Chelsea (B squad) at Stamford Bridge last night 4-2. A loss, even a draw, would have surely knocked the Italian squad out of the running for advancement in the Champions Cup.
With Miccoli and Hernandez sharing the success at 2 goals a piece, Chelsea manager DavidWade had put out a starting lineup that was on the less experienced side with the likes of Lampard, Drogba, Sturridge, Cole, and John Terry all watching from the sidelines. Even though a loss was the result, a positive spotlight shined on the England squad as the young Lukaku scored the 2 goals showing much promise for future success of the boys in blue.
"I decided to rest the majority of my first team players because this was a match that we didn't need to win," says Burns. "I wanted to make sure we had a healthy squad against Liverpool in our upcoming league match."
Although these 3 points put Palermo into competitive conversation in regards to the Champions Cup, there is still much work to be done.
"It's very boosting to morale and great for this team's confidence to go into Stamford Bridge Stadium and take back a W against such a historically and currently strong team," says Ingoglia. "We realize that the stars of Chelsea were not on the pitch, yet it is no cakewalk going into that environment and just waltzing out of there with success. They have some great youth coming up as the fans were able to witness in Lukaku and Romeu. Regardless, we did what we needed to do and look forward to our home match vs a very strong Bayern Munich team."
With Liverpool a clear favorite to move on and Chelsea nearly locking up a worst case scenario 3rd place finish, the battle to avoid watching this wonderful cup on tv falls on Bayern and Palermo. As the old saying goes, only time will tell. Tune in for some exciting football as this cup nears closer to the next stage.
