Chelsea managed to pull off a shock victory over rivals, Liverpool, in the Champions Cup on Friday night. Liverpool started the scoring early when Suarez and Assaidi cleverly linked up around the Chelsea penalty spot. Liverpool continued to pour the pressure on the Blues but failed to make anything of their chances. Chelsea took advantage of Liverpool's failure to cash in on any of their chances and equalized through Ramires, who latched on to an Oscar pass and beat Pepe Reina with a first time strike from the edge of area. Oscar found himself in the middle of things a few minutes later when Liverpool defender, Martin Skrtel, brought him down for a penalty. With Frank Lampard sitting out because of an injury, Eden Hazard stepped up converted to give Chelsea the lead before halftime.
The second half was much of the same from Liverpool. They worked the ball well, not letting Chelsea see any time with it, and created dozens of opportunities to score. Chelsea managed to hang on the lead with the help of goal keeper Petr Cech, and several big blocks from David Luis and John Terry.
After the match, Chelsea manager (David Burns), was very candid when speaking about his clubs win. "I'm obviously excited that we won tonight. We have had very little success against Liverpool in this competition in the past, so its nice to finally get a win. That being said, I am disappointed with the way we played tonight. We were sloppy when we had possession and let Liverpool take far too many uncontested shots. We were lucky that Petr, JT and Luis all stepped up the way they did. If it wasn't for their efforts we probably would've lost by 3 or 4 goals. They were the much better team tonight and deserved at least a point."
Burns was then asked Liverpool's chances in the league this season. "Liverpool aren't as talented as they were in past seasons but they are still a very good club. I think we are right there with them as far playing style goes. Its a shame that we weren't able to showcase that tonight though. I know its going to be a tough year for both our clubs. It seems like certain teams are willing to park the bus against us in search of a point but then suddenly have the confidence to out and try to play against a team like Arsenal. I think Arsenal is going to collect a lot more easy points this year then Chelsea and Liverpool and have a legitimate shot of challenging for the league title."
Higher rated club's 'keeper in man of the match shocker...the headline should read.

DeleteThat would be when a team decides to put 10 men behind the ball to try to get a single point from a team they think they can't beat (Liverpool) and then don't do the same against Bayern and lose by 7. Same thing could happen with the gooners this season.
