Group A Review: Two Through; One Comfortably; One Unconvincingly

Elation in Deutschland as qualification for the semi-finals came all too comfortably last night in London. A four-goal margin of victory over a listless English side saw the Germans garner all the points they needed to ensure a number one seed in Group A. It's been a bit of a cakewalk for the Deutschers thus far; wrapping up the top seed with two matches to spare.

The closing match in Berlin sets the stage for an emotional tribute to goalkeeping stalwart, Robert Enke. The tragic events of recent weeks set the stage for a fitting sendoff to a man that would have been an integral part of Germany's future endeavors. 


The second nation to qualify, in far less convincing fashion, was England. Going into their last match, the three lions only needed a solitary point against Italy to ensure qualification for the next round. In trademark English style, they soon found themselves 2 nil down and on the verge of another embarassing early exit. Fortunately for "sir" Burns, Italy manager, C. Ingoglia's refusal to absorb pressure and strike on the break allowed Wayne Rooney to turn the momentum on its ear. Italy was able to restore parity late on, but it was too little too late to claim the required amount of points.



Group B review should be up shortly...(You in the back, stop laughing. When I say "shortly" in regard to Group B, I'm speaking relatively. So for them I'd say....about three weeks.....at best......bottlers....)
