A disappointing start to the GIMP 09 for the boys in blue. Roma dominated the side however a dark cloud was cast on the game by suspect officiating. There were several occasions in which a Chelsea player was wrestled to the ground and not a whistle was blown. On two occasions Drogba was brought down in the box from the side and no foul was awarded. Terry on the other hand was sent off late in the game after denying a chance on goal from Totti. Roma played a very physical style of football and caught many breaks. It seemed as if at times Ballack was trying to sabotage the Blues by laying balls perfectly in front of streaking Roma players. Roma took an early lead and saw it dissapear just 5 minutes later when Anelka equalized. After that it was all Roma. A second half hat trick from Totti helped Roma go on to win 5-1.

Burns was quoted after the match saying:
" It was an absolute disgrace of a game. Yes Roma played hard but I still will have a hard time admitting that they outright deserved this win. When Didier came on in the second half I thought it was going to be ours for the taking. He and Joe Cole worked brilliantly together but luck wasn't on our sides. The ref seemed to have some sort of agenda out there and the Terry red card should be over turned. I find it hard to believe that all the fouls I saw commited on Drogba should've gone unpunished. The man was hurt within minutes of stepping onto the field. You can expect an imidiate turn around once we are able to use Ricardo Quaresma in place of Malouda."
