It was a return to the familiar days of DFA England, as the Three Lions made another early exit from the International Cup. In a tightly contested affair with Brazil, a lone Robinho strike in the 116th minute sent the Samba Kings through to their first ever final. Although England looked comfortable at the end of group play, they admittedly made difficult work of what several gaffers flippantly called, "an easy group."
Perhaps a three week hiatus was not the best preparation for a semi-final clash against a talented Brazil squad.
In the most lopsided semi-final in GIMP history, two-time champions Germany swept aside Portugal 6-0 to claim their fifth consecutive finals appearance. It was Rene Adler's record-smashing 7th clean sheet, and Miroslav Klose's record-setting 14th goal that set up Die Nationalmannschaft's finals tie against Brazil.
Will the Germans continue their impressive 9-0-0 (+31 GD) run, or will underdogs Brazil ruin Germany's dream of a third International title?
Ian had the better players on the field and other than the opening 50 minutes or so played the best. It was a fair result.

ReplyDeleteDisagree on the open nets for both sides. The shots taken by England were from distance and less than favorable angles.
ReplyDeleteThere weren't two open nets that we both missed? I seem to remember both our keepers wandering outside the 18 at one point no?
